Jim Kelly Invited to Testify at New York State Governor's Budget Hearing
Jim Kelly, CEO of JVKellyGroup, Inc. has been invited to testify at a budget hearing for New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer's 2008-09 Executive Budget on Friday, March, 7, 2008.

The hearing will give Long Island government officials, community leaders, and business leaders an opportunity to speak to state lawmakers on how the proposed budget would impact local residents.  The session is sponsored by the Assembly Republican Members from Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

Jim Kelly said it is a privilege to be asked. “I am honored,” said Jim, “to represent my community and my business at this important hearing.  These budget decisions have a major impact on how we work and live. We hope the message can be carried to Albany that our property taxes are too high and are choking the potential of our residential and business markets. The Governor makes many good points in his budget, but the detail needs to be crystal clear on how we will make up the short fall without one area of the state being sacrificed for the sake of another area of the state.”

eSourcing: Promise Delivered, Delayed or Missed?
Jim Kelly
recently spoke at the Connecticut Association of Purchasing Management on the topic of eSourcing.  His presentation covered how components such as, eSpend analysis, eRFx, Reverse eAuctions and Contract Management Systems can interact to achieve maximum advantages.  He also led discussion on how much should be spent on these solutions and how to get Senior Management to see the value.

Attendee, Dr. Subroto Roy, stated the following in his web blog, “A great insight from Jim's talk was, for me, a better understanding of the nature of the organizational e-procurement process. Consider a three year contract that is negotiated using an e-procurement system. The buyer who works on the system would typically move out of her/his role in three years when time comes to put out an RFP for the new contract. Institutional knowledge of the RFP process for the commodity in question is lost and the new buyer has to start all over again.”

Later in the day, Jim also presented to the National Association of Purchasing Management – New York.  In his presentation, “How To Bring Additional Value to Internal Customer”, Jim discussed the concepts behind managing with the right metrics, change management, and distributed intelligence.

Jim Kelly Addresses Long Island's Key Partnerships and Business Issues at Economic Summit

James V. Kelly, Jr., CEO and Principal of JVKG shared the spotlight with many of Long Island’s business leaders who gathered at the Hilton LI to take part in the 9th Annual Economic Summit. The summit was sponsored by the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce. Kelly was featured on a panel of nine experts and leaders from business, industry, education, and government. They discussed the forecast for economic growth, community revitalization, infrastructure redevelopment and strategic planning that will move Long Island forward to meet the challenges facing our region with regard to employment, housing, healthcare and education. As CEO/Principal of JVKG, Kelly is extremely active in understanding and charting the course of major corporations in expense management solutions. Kelly was formerly Managing Director of Global eSourcing at Deutsche Bank. He has significant expertise in using metrics to increase purchasing performance; process reengineering through process mapping; contract negotiation and supplier management utilizing a balanced scorecard approach.

Former New York State Assemblyman and partner in the law firm of Ruskin, Moscou, Faltischek, Arthur 'Jerry' Kremer moderated the presentation and raised numerous questions for each of the panelists to consider. Mr. Kremer, once the influential Chairman of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee and frequent political analyst and commentator for News 12 Long Island, Fox and ABC television opened the Economic Summit by stating that, "We have a fascinating opportunity to dialogue with a cross section of people with expertise in a diverse range of areas including business, industry and education."

In addition to Kelly, panelists for the Summit included: Joseph Mottola, Chief Executive Officer, Long Island Board of Realtors/MLS, Robert Gaffney, President of Dowling College and former Suffolk County Executive; Jim Morgo, Suffolk County Commissioner of Economic Development and Workforce; Anthony DiMaso, Vice President for Corporate Strategy and Development, Verizon Communications; Richard Galant, Associate Editor at Newsday; Kevin Lawler, President and CEO, Huntington Hospital; Chris Giamo, Market President, Commerce Bank; and Roz Goldmacher, President/CEO and founder of the Long Island Development Corporation/Greater New York Development Corporation.

Among the major topics covered during the Economic Summit was the need to recruit and retain a young, talented and experienced workforce. Kelly emphasized the difficulties both small businesses and large corporations are having recruiting and retaining a younger workforce that can’t afford to live on Long Island because of the cost of housing and other related expenses. "Small businesses on Long Island are retrenching and doing more with less as a result of a limited pool of young, qualified employees able to afford to live on Long Island and other factors such as the rising cost of fuel, energy, and doing business in our region. Both small business and our larger corporations are competing with each other among a limited pool of trained employees. Our universities, trade schools and other educational facilities must work in concert with business and industry to make sure that we are training students for the right jobs on Long Island. Following that, we must insure that government and the real estate industry are part of equation by developing affordable housing and other residential options that a younger workforce can afford so they will choose to stay on Long Island. Without these prerequisites young people will continue to make the exodus from Long Island, reducing our competitive edge in technology jobs, the financial sector and the not-for-profit industries," stated Kelly.

All of the panelists contributed significantly to the discussions about Long Island’s economic health and future. John Caracciolo, Vice Chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce saw the annual Economic Summit as “a great opportunity for all of us to take some time to hear what others see as the economic future of Long Island and for each of us to share our thoughts with others involved in business and industry on Long Island. We requested that Jim Kelly join our panel of experts because of his expertise and contributions in the field of spend management. We felt his participation and input would be critical in addressing the greatest issues and opportunities facing the future of Long Island," explained Caracciolo.
